The Eurocopter (Airbus Helicopters) EC 135 is a modern helicopter with an articulated main rotor system. A special feature of this flight pattern is the sheathed tail rotor (Fenestron), which has a noise-reducing effect and reduces the risk of accidents. Various versions of the helicopter fly worldwide in the private sector, in police and rescue services and in the military.
In 2000, the first models of the Bundeswehr began their service as training helicopters at the International Helicopter Training Centre in Bückeburg. Within 14 months, the flight students learn to fly according to visual and instrument flight rules, as well as the night flight with and without technical aids.
As of 2019, the current 13 aircraft have completed over 100,000 flying hours.
Since 2013, the German Navy has been operating the EC135 P2+ in Nordholz, which is specially equipped for flights over the sea. The helicopter has been provided by HTM since 2021. The young student pilots of the naval aviation squadron thus gain experience in a maritime environment before they begin their training on the Sea Lynx MK 88A or NH90 operational types. Thanks to the optionally available winch, for example, procedures for preparation for search-and-rescue operations can be practiced for the first time.
