The VL3 is a single-engine, two-seater, three axis-controlled ultralight aircraft in a low-wing configuration whose airframe, wings, and tail units are constructed almost entirely from composite materials (CFRP). With a cruising speed of approx. 260 km/h, it is one of the fastest aircraft of its kind.
The VL3 was initially developed entirely as a virtual prototype, including all mechanical and aerodynamic simulations of the airframe, wings, control surfaces, flaps, and landing gear using Dassault Systems’ software. The VL-3 owes its impressive flight performance to its design as an aerodynamically “clean” side-by-side low-wing aircraft. Its relatively short wings with laminar airfoils, slight sweep, and V-position (but without winglets) as well as the aerodynamically flat passenger canopy and the engine cover with aerodynamically optimised ventilation openings make a significant contribution to reducing drag.
The VL3 Evolution has a cruising speed of up to approx. 370 km/h and a range of over 2,000 km with the optional 140-litre tanks, making it a VFR touring aircraft. From the centre of Germany, all destinations in the neighbouring countries can be reached without a stopover. With its moderate fuel consumption of approx. 18 l/h of Mogas (Super 95) in view of this travel performance, the VL3 is one of the most economical travel options available, whereby – apart from the time saved – it also undercuts economical cars in terms of fuel consumption.
With unmodified production models (without additional tanks, special fuel, aerodynamic modifications, etc.) and fully loaded (two people with luggage), two VL3 Evolution successfully crossed the Atlantic in an east-west direction in July 2016.
